SV Darmstadt 98 lost the last test match of the pre-season. A debacle was looming for the lilies against Liverpool, who then pulled themselves out of the affair respectably.
SV Darmstadt 98 lost the dress rehearsal before the start of the competitive season. At Liverpool FC – more precisely in Preston, about 60 kilometers from Liverpool – the southern Hessians had to admit defeat on Monday evening 1: 3 (1: 2).
Mohamed Salah scored from a corner kick to give the home side the lead (5th minute), Diogo Jota immediately followed up after a capital defensive buck (8th minute). Mathias Honsak scored the first goal for Lilien (10′), Luis Diaz made it 3-1 for the Reds (59′).
Lilien hopelessly overwhelmed
The game started as badly as possible for the southern Hessian outsider. After a corner kick, the ball fell in front of Salah’s feet, who scored the Liverpool lead from close range. Just three minutes later, the Reds’ attacking pressing had an effect. Under pressure, Marcel Schuhen passed a little too tightly to Christoph Zimmermann, who let the ball bounce a little too far. The lilies seemed hopelessly overwhelmed in this initial phase. The entourage who had traveled with them had to fear a debacle when Honsak made the connection out of nowhere. The goal gave the lilies self-confidence. Although the home side were still the better team with the better chances (31st, 35th, 38th, 41st), the Bundesliga promoted team was now more secure overall and was able to repeatedly launch relief attacks. Zimmermann just missed equalizing with a drop kick after a corner kick (17th).
Luis Diaz does magic, Lieberknecht changes
Torsten Lieberknecht brought four new players into the second half. The first appearance of newcomer Fraser Hornby, who was committed but remained pale overall, was over after 45 minutes. Filip Stojilkovic came on for him.
A Liverpool striker provided the next highlight. Luis Diaz jumped into a corner at the near post and completed artistically with his outside instep under the bar (59′). Three minutes later, the Colombian had the brace on his feet but failed to hit the ball properly. Darwin’s shot, which was then defused, is worth seeing (62′).
The lilies were now out of breath. Lieberknecht made five more substitutions in the 68th minute, including substitute keeper Alexander Brunst. Things will get serious for the lilies next Monday, August 14th. The DFB Cup game at FC 08 Homburg kicks off at 6 p.m.
