Late Goal Saves the Day: Donyell Malen’s Impact in BVB’s Victory over 1. FC Köln

In the final phase of the duel with 1. FC Köln, BVB coach Edin Terzic prepared two changes. Among other things, offensive player Donyell Malen was supposed to give way, but was ultimately allowed to stay – and happily scored a win.

When the last ten regular minutes of the game between Dortmund and Cologne were already running on Saturday evening, the two BVB pros Marius Wolf and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens had already lined up to come on at around 8:12 p.m. Only Wolf entered the square.

Why? Because in addition to the ailing newcomer and left-back Ramy Bensebaini, right-back Julian Ryerson suddenly announced that he also had to be replaced.

So Dortmund’s head coach Edin Terzic apologized to 19-year-old offensive man Bynoe-Gittens, waved Thorgan Hazard over and brought the Belgian for Ryerson. The most interesting thing: Bynoe-Gittens would have been traded for Donyell Malen. Under the circumstances that changed at short notice, the Dutch national player was allowed to stay – with well-known consequences: the 24-year-old dribbling artist sneaked in in front of the six-yard box on the left in the 88th minute, received the ball after Julian Brandt’s corner kick and, with luck, scored on the top left to make it 1-0 and led the black and yellow to a really happy victory over a strong Cologne at the end of the day.

Terzic apologizes to Bynoe-Gittens

Coach Edin Terzic then explained the facts of the changed change in detail in the interview with “Sky” and explained: “It was the case that Ramy had initially indicated that he had to get out. Then it was planned that we would put Julian on the left and bring Marius to the right. In the scene where we wanted to switch, Julian also signaled that he couldn’t go any further. So we had to switch – and then we brought in Thorgan instead of Jamie.”

Terzic clearly suffered with Bynoe-Gittens, who had to go back to the bench already fully dressed. “I’m sorry for Jamie, because of course we had hoped that he could give us something again on the offensive,” said the BVB coach. “But such stories are written in football that in the end whoever stayed on top scores the goal. And hopefully Jamie can do the magic for us next week.”

“We are dissatisfied, the boys are dissatisfied”

Was very critical of himself: BVB captain Emre Can. IMAGO/Team 2

Terzic made no secret of the fact that next Saturday (3.30 p.m., LIVE! at kicker) the Ruhrpott derby in Bochum must go much better: “There wasn’t much that we liked today. We liked that we won the game. And that we were dangerous by set pieces, we’ve worked a lot on that over the last few days and weeks. But there were a lot of things that we didn’t like. It wasn’t a good performance from us today. We had a lot a lot of possession – but in areas where there is no risk of scoring. We have also put ourselves in situations where we lost the ball in the center and ran into counterattacks.”

In the end, however, it would be “that the first game was won at home. We (as a coaching team; Anm. d. Red.) are dissatisfied, the boys are dissatisfied – that’s a good thing. So we have to address a few scenes clearly in the next few days.”

I didn’t play a good game, made a lot of mistakes – that’s why the substitution was justified.

His new captain – Emre Can – blew the same horn: “There has to be a lot more to come, we didn’t play well. It wasn’t 100 percent. We know that. We were kind of sluggish, didn’t have any energy on the pitch. But we did I’m happy to take the three points.”

The Germany international, who was elected the new captain, also criticized himself – especially in connection with his substitution in the 59th minute for Felix Nmecha: “I didn’t play a good game, I made a lot of mistakes – that’s why the substitution was there justified.” From his point of view, however, everything should get better with further games – for the team and for him.
