Lakers to honor Kobe Bryant with a statue

The Los Angeles Lakers will honor Hall of Famer Kobe Bryant with a statue in front of the stadium where he played most of his career.

The team announced Thursday the plan to honor Bryant, the fourth leading scorer in NBA history and a beloved pillar of the franchise for 20 seasons, with a statue to be unveiled on February 8, 2024 in Crypto. com Arena.

The announcement was made on Aug. 24, known as “Kobe Day” since the eighth month and the 24th tie Bryant’s jersey numbers with the Lakers (Nos. 8, 24).

Bryant’s wife, Vanessa, announced the statue will be unveiled in Star Plaza outside the stadium before the Lakers’ game that night against the Denver Nuggets (10 pm ET, TNT). He is the sixth former Lakers player and the seventh team employee to be honored with a statue at the stadium, which has been the home of the Lakers since 1999.

“As you know, Kobe played his entire 20-year NBA career as the Los Angeles Laker,” Vanessa Bryant said in a fan video posted at 8:24 this morning. “Since he came to this city and joined the Lakers organization, he has felt at home here, playing in the City of Angels. On behalf of the Lakers, my daughters and myself, it is a great honor for me that, right in the center of Los Angeles, in front of the place known as the house that Kobe built, we will unveil his statue so that his legacy can be celebrated forever.”
