Korean badminton, which commanded the world stage as a shuttlecock powerhouse in the 1990s and 2000s, has not won a gold medal since the 2008 Beijing Games on the Olympic stage. Moreover, at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang, he suffered the humiliation of a no medal.

After a long slump, a new heyday has arrived for badminton in Korea. The national team players have been active in various world competitions since this year, and announced the prospects for the Hangzhou Asian Games and the 2024 Paris Olympics to be held next month. Korea recently overtook Japan to rank second in the world team rankings after China.

The national badminton team, led by coach Kim Hak-kyun, held a media day at the Jincheon National Athlete’s Village on the 16th and announced their aspirations for the Asian Games.

The player who is receiving the most attention is Ahn Se-young (21, Samsung Life Insurance), the ‘signboard’ of women’s badminton. He went on to win the women’s singles title this season and rose to the top of the world in her run-up this year. Ahn Se-young, who won the gold medal in women’s singles in 27 years at the Jeonyeong Open in March since Bang Su-hyeon in 1996, also won the Korea Open and the Japan Open last month, surpassing Akane Yamaguchi of Japan to become the world’s No. 1 in women’s singles. This is also the first time in 27 years since Bang Soo-hyun. Bang Soo-hyun, a gold medalist at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, is the only Korean singles player to be a ‘legend’ on the ‘Hall of Fame’ of the World Badminton Federation. Ahn Se-young is evaluated as a person who succeeds Bang Soo-hyun.

Ahn Se-young expressed his determination that day, “The Asian Games will be held in China, and no matter where the tournament is held, if you enjoy it as usual, you will get good enough results.” She continued, “The title of ranking first is burdensome, but I’m excited and excited.”

The face of women’s doubles is also gorgeous. Kim So-young (Incheon International Airport) and Gong Hee-yong (Jeonbuk Bank), the ‘Kim Kong duo’ who shines at No. 3 in the women’s doubles ranking, are on a steep rise, winning four victories this season, including winning the Australian Open following the Japanese Open. Lee So-hee (Incheon International Airport) and Baek Ha-na (Saemaeul Geumgo), who are ranked 4th in the rankings, are also consistently producing results, including a silver medal at the Jeonyeong Open.

The prospects for men’s doubles and mixed doubles are not bad either. The world No. 6 men’s doubles team, Kang Min-hyeok and Seo Seung-jae (above Samsung Life Insurance), shook off the disappointment of third place in the Korea Open last month and won the gold medal at the Australian Open on the 6th. In the mixed doubles at the last Jeonyeong Open, Seo Seung-jae and Chae Yoo-jeong (Incheon Airport) won the silver medal, and Kim Won-ho (Samsung Life Insurance) and Jeong Na-eun (Hwasun-gun Office) won the bronze medal, proving their skills.

Head coach Kim Hak-gyun, who took the baton in November of last year, said, “It seems that good results have been coming out since the beginning of this year as the players and coaches trust each other and train.” “If the current momentum continues, the players will be able to live up to expectations. I would be grateful if you give me a lot of encouragement.”

The national team will now participate in the 2023 World Individual Badminton Championships held in Copenhagen, Denmark on the 21st and 27th, and then participate in the China Open on the 5th and 10th of next month. Afterwards, on the 23rd of the same month, he will go on a medal hunt at the Asian Games opening in Hangzhou.

Meanwhile, Jang Mi-ran, the second vice minister of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, who is a ‘weightlifting hero’, visited the athletes’ village and encouraged juniors in each sport, including badminton and weightlifting. He said, “I will make the Jincheon National Training Center a comprehensive facility with the world’s best training environment. As a member of the national team, I have personally experienced life in the athletes’ village, so I will take care of things more carefully from the perspective of the players.” He encouraged the players, saying, “The most important thing is to hold an injury-free and safe tournament,” and “I hope you do your best so that the people can cheer.”
