“Kiss Affair”: Rubiales lays the Spanish federation in ruins

After the RFEF boss refused to resign, FIFA suspended him for 90 days. Large parts of the coaching team are resigning in protest, 80 players are on strike – and Rubiales still wants to keep fighting. Just why?

Less than a week after winning the women’s World Cup for the first time, Spain’s football association RFEF is in a heap of rubble. Its president Luis Rubiales, 46, was banned for 90 days by the world association Fifa on Saturday because of the so-called “kiss affair”. Irrespective of this, the Spanish government is impeaching him. Because of the FIFA ban, Spain’s association appointed the previous Rubiales deputy Pedro Rocha, 69, as interim president, who was the subject of talk a few years ago because of allegedly manipulated elections in his regional association. Rocha’s first official act was to completely withdraw an association communiqué from Saturday, in which Rubiales had started to flee to the front. In it, the player Jennifer Hermoso, 33, whom he kissed in Sydney, was accused of lying. She will be misdirected and remotely controlled by the FutPro players’ union.
