The first one was scored by the former “bad man” of Real Madrid, the 40-year-old stopper Pepe. It is widely known that he sometimes does not bother with football rules too much, which he also proved in the match against Jurász. In the opening minute of the second act, behind 2:0 for Benfica, he rather needlessly attacked the Czech defender with a knee to the tailbone on the sideline. Unfortunately for Pepe, the video referee was present at the match, so the head referee Luis Godinho had no choice but to send the experienced Portuguese to the showers prematurely.
But that was far from all. A weakened Porto managed to reduce the turnover, but the contact goal was disallowed for handball, which really upset coach Sergio Conceicao. He rebelled against the arbitrator’s statement so vehemently that his eyes also turned red. Then a rather comical situation arose, as the 48-year-old coach refused to leave the field of play for several minutes after his dismissal, so a lengthy debate with referee Godinho ensued.
Although it may not seem so from the description of the heated conclusion, before that there were also pure football fights on the lawn. In the first act, David Jurásek only watched from the substitutes’ bench, so he only got into the game at the start of the second half together with another former Slav player, Petar Musa. By the way, Jurásek replaced Mihail Ristic, a former Sparta player, on the left side of the defense.
And the half-time changes benefited Benfica. A quarter of an hour after the break, Ángel Di María, probably the most famous name on the roster of the Lisbon team, scored with a nice shot at the back post. Seven minutes later, Petar Musa followed it up with a precise finish from the edge of the penalty area, thus definitively deciding the fate of the match in favor of Benfica.
Jurásek thus began his new engagement as successfully as possible. Benfica, as the reigning champion of Portugal, overpowered Porto, which in the last year’s domestic competition they surpassed in the final table by only two points. And the fact that both of the winners’ goals were scored at the moment when the Czech defender got on the pitch will certainly not hurt him in the fight for a fixed place in the starting eleven.
