Judo Team Holten Koriouchi Claims Second Division Championship

(JTH) August 26, 2023 – It is 3:12 p.m. on Saturday afternoon when the Günther-Stolz-Halle at the Freiherr-vom-Stein-Gymnasium is upside down. After just under an hour of fighting, the first team of the judo team Holten Koriouchi beat Gelsenkirchen 11:3 and celebrates the second division championship. And the rise?

“We’re keeping all options open, today we’re going to celebrate first,” says head coach and JTH chairman Ralf Najdowski, who refuses to look at his cards. In fact, the judo team may have written a piece of Oberhausen sports history with first place in the 2nd Judo Bundesliga in only its third Bundesliga season. Such a final was by no means foreseeable at the beginning – that applies to the course of the season as well as to the day of the competition, because the Holteners had expected significantly more resistance from the Gelsenkircheners. But they met decimated and deranged opponents: “That wasn’t the team of the season. The Gelsenkircheners were missing three of their Dutch fighters, who are competing internationally in Portugal this weekend. If they had been there today, it would probably have been closer, in the range of 7:7, 7:6 or maybe even 9:5”, said the coach, who was nevertheless clearly happy about what he had achieved.

Decimated opponents, record-breaking net fight time

The first half of the season went 7-0 to the judo team Holten with a record-breaking net fight time of just under five minutes; the fights of Janson and Jason Wong -60kg and -66kg respectively, as well as Justin Kappes -81kg, Lars Gajda -90kg and Dries Ponnet -73kg all went squeaky clean with ippon to JTH; Christian Beckmann (-100 kg) and Marcel Lauer (+100 kg) scored their Ippon after the opponents started but signaled surrender before the start of the fight. So the Gelsenkirchen escaped a penalty due to unoccupied weight classes. In the second half of the season, Michael Grieß -100 kg after a grab hold extended Holten’s lead to 8:0, but then the guests showed more resistance. In the games -60 kg (Florian Hück for Janson Wong) and -66 kg (Jason Wong again) the veterans from Gelsenkirchen prevailed. Justin Kappes also encountered much more resistance, but kept the overview even after a Waza-ari deficit and completed himself with a deep Seoi-nage: Ippon. Robin Ellerbrock, -90 kg came for Gajda, was unfortunately unlucky, while Beckmann, now upgraded to +100 kg, won without a fight. Sebastian Menz -73 kg with Tani-otoshi got the last point of the day to 11:3 for Holten. More information about the club on the homepage and on Facebook.
