Journalists Criticize Maurice Steijn’s Line-up Choices in Ajax’s Match Against Excelsior

Mike Verweij thinks that Maurice Steijn made wrong choices in his line-up in the duel with Excelsior. According to the De Telegraaf journalist, the Ajax coach should not have had to change his starting position.

“Steijn also has to put his hand in his own bosom,” said Verweij in De Telegraaf’s football podcast. “Kudus did quite well as a right winger in the first match. You could have just left it with Bergwijn on ten and Borges on his favorite left side. Then I think it would have made a little more sense. It didn’t work against Excelsior, but if you play the game ten more times, I think you’ll win it ten times.”

Colleague Valentijn Driessen also thought Ajax was disappointing. “Everyone was talking about Van den Boomen and Medic. And with Borges, everyone had already seen within three actions that he could do something,” says Driessen. “Just as the first match against Heracles does not say everything, this match does not say everything either.”

Driessen is not yet convinced of the Ajax newcomers. “But for me these are not players who will make Ajax much better. Sutalo, on the other hand, I think is a great purchase,” he concludes.
