Jon Singleton Hits Two Home Runs in MLB Comeback for Astros

Jon Singleton hit two home runs, his first in MLB since 2015, on Friday in the Houston Astros’ 11-3 win over the Los Angeles Angels.

In his first game at Minute Maid Park in more than eight years, Singleton homered on his first two at bats. He hit a three-run homer in the second inning and a two-run slap in the third.

It was the first time in his career that he hit two homers in the same game. His five RBIs are also a personal best.

He also walked and singled and finished the game with three runs scored.

The former Astros’ affiliate network No. 1 prospect lost his MLB job after struggling in his first seasons with Houston in 2014 and 2015 and drug abuse issues marred his comeback attempts. major league baseball in the years that followed.

Singleton signed a minor league contract with the Brewers following a stellar 2021 season in the Mexican league and managed to make a major league comeback with Milwaukee earlier this season.

After playing 11 games with the Brewers in June, Singleton was released but immediately hired by the Astros, who also signed him to a minor league contract.

After dominating at the AAA level with a .333 average, 12 home runs and 28 RBIs in 33 games, Singleton was recalled Monday by the Astros, with whom he played his third game of the season Friday night.

Justin Verlander (7-6) was making his second start since returning to Houston, his 500th overall in his career. He took the opportunity to sign his 251st win, allowing three runs on six hits and striking out seven batters in six innings.

Dirty perfect until 5th on his return

Red Sox left-hander Chris Sale was perfect until the fifth inning before allowing a solo homer in his first start since June 1 in Boston’s 5-2 win over the Detroit Tigers.

Sale allowed a long ball to Kerry Carpenter and reached next hitter Javier Baez before being called out of the game after four and two-thirds innings with a 4-1 lead and 58 pitches on the clock. A second earned run was added to his record when Riley Greene pushed Baez home with a single.

Sale had been on the injured list since complaining of shoulder pain when he left on June 1. This is the sixth straight season that Sale’s name has been on the Red Sox injured reserve.

He is 5-2 with a 4.52 ERA in 12 starts this season.
