Jon Rahm Struggles in First FedEx Cup Knockout Event at TPC Southwind

The TPC Southwind in Memphis (USA) is not witness to Jon Rahm’s best week. The Basque is struggling in the first of three FedEx Cup knockout events, though a fit yesterday allowed him to climb the ranks at the St. Jude Championship. With one more round to go, Rahm is 42nd at -3 thanks to a three-under third round, featuring four birdies over the final five holes. He continues to be ruled out of the fight for the title, in which Lucas Glover has the advantage (-14).

It is strange to see a discreet Rahm in the first event of the FedEx Cup playoffs, because, with the exception of 2018, when he missed the cut, Barrika’s worst result was sixth place. Jon used to meet at the St. Jude Championship (before the playoffs were opened at The Northern Trust), but things are not going well in this edition. This Saturday, the two birdies that Rahmbo achieved at 1 and 3 were quickly erased by a double bogey, which could well have been triple, at 4 after going into the water. The day seemed to get worse when in the 13th a bogey was scored as a result of a trip, but that mistake activated the best Rahm.

In the last five holes, the number three in the world brought out his entire repertoire. Great putt at 14 for birdie, and shots at 15, 16 and 18 that secured three more birdies. Thus he was able to clean up his turn, and also removed the thorn he had with the last hole of TPC Southwind, where he had gone into the water in the previous two days. Rahm’s reaction helps him in his defense of the one in the FedEx Cup, threatened by Scottie Scheffler (23rd with -6 after a round of one over par). If things ended like this, Jon would retain the top spot heading into next week’s BMW Championship.

Meanwhile, American Lucas Glover remains on pole in the race for victory. With a round of 66 shots, four under par, Glover scored a -14 that allows him to continue leading with one day to go. His compatriot Taylor Moore follows a single impact, and from behind they will try to surprise others such as Tommy Fleetwood (-12), Max Homa, Jordan Spieth (-11 both), Viktor Hovland, Patrick Cantlay, Tom Kim, Sungjae Im, Emiliano Cricket or Rory McIlroy (-9).
