This name says it all: Jermain Nischalke! The new signing of the U23s literally takes the hearts of Borussia Dortmund fans by storm – given the rivalry with FC Schalke 04, it’s no wonder with this distinctive surname.
Only signed on loan from 1. FC Nürnberg on August 3, the striker made his BVB debut for the second team just two days later when he came on as a substitute after 84 minutes in the third division opener in a goalless draw at Preussen Münster.
As if the nearly 1,200 BVB supporters who had traveled with them had longed for this moment, they sang his name over and over again after Ni(e)schalke had been substituted on. The hype surrounding the 20-year-old is immense. The newcomer had to smile a little himself when the fans loudly intoned his name.
Jerseys with his name are also a hit. Since U23 jerseys with the names of the players are not available in the fan shop at all, the electrified fans have Nischalke’s name printed in droves as an individual flock.
Nischalke himself is getting a bit too much hype about his person. The new Dortmund fan favorite initially declined interviews after his first brief assignment.
“You wanted it that way,” he announced on Twitter in a short video message after his commitment. Nischalke alluded to the numerous comments from fans who wanted to lure him to Dortmund after moving to the Nuremberg regional league team.
Angry tongues could claim that the signing of the native of Berlin, who scored 18 goals in 30 games for fourth division Nuremberg last season, was a PR stunt.
“It’s an exclusively sporting decision by the U23s,” contradicts Dortmund’s marketing boss Carsten Cramer in the picture. “Nevertheless, of course, I also noticed that the boy seems to be interested in the people in Dortmund.”
Become the crowd favorite in no time – not everyone can do that, but now Nischalke wants to make headlines at BVB, who have secured a purchase option for the attacker.
“We’ve been watching Jermain for a while, we’re convinced of his qualities and we’re sure he can help us,” said Ingo Preuss, sporting director of BVB’s U23 team.
