About 3,000 world senior badminton players from 43 countries, including retired players, compete in Jeonju, North Jeolla Province.

Jeonju City announced on the 23rd that the ‘2023 Jeonju BWF World Senior Badminton Championships’ will be held at the Volcano Gymnasium and Deokjin Badminton Court from September 11th to 17th.

Starting with the first tournament held in Vancouver, Canada in 2011, this tournament is the highest level of badminton competition, followed by Ankara, Turkey in 2013, Helsingborg, Sweden in 2021, Cochin, Kerala, India in 2016, Katowice, Poland in 2019, and 2021. It is held every two years, such as in Huelva, Spain.

The competition is held in 10 divisions and 5 events, divided into 5 age groups from the minimum age of 35 to 80 years old, and the events compete in men’s singles and doubles, women’s singles and doubles, and mixed doubles.

As a result of recruiting participants for the competition led by the Korea Badminton Association from June to August, it is expected that 3,000 people from 43 countries will visit Jeonju to participate in this competition.

As this tournament is a large-scale international event that requires cooperation from various organizations, the city plans to promote cooperation with seniors at the site of the ’33rd Jeonju Mayor’s Period Sports Badminton Tournament’ to be held for two days from the 26th with badminton associations in each region across the country. There will also be time to make up your mind.

Hwang Kwon-joo, director of the Jeonju City Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau, said, “As Korea’s first badminton world championship level competition is being held in Jeonju, we will do our best to make this event a success.”
