Jasson Dominguez Could Make September Call-Up for Yankees Despite Disappointing Season

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Jasson Dominguez is fresh off the Triple-A level, but it doesn’t seem out of the question that he could arrive in the Bronx at some point in the final month of the season.

With the Yankees putting more focus on their future recently thanks to their brutally disappointing season — they launched four players aged 24 or younger on Sunday — Dominguez could be a candidate for a September call-up.

“I’m in the camp and I think he’s going to be a really good player in this league,” manager Aaron Boone said. “I think that’s a really special talent. … Obviously he hits the ball, is athletic and can run, but I like that at a very young age he can really control the strike zone.

“Hopefully it’s something that when he gets here will really be something that will serve him well.”

The 20-year-old is 11 of 23 with 10 RBIs, four walks and one strikeout in his first seven games at Triple-A.

Dominguez isn’t on the 40-man roster yet, but the Yankees will have to add him this offseason anyway, to protect him from the Rule 5 draft, which could work in his favor to potentially make his MLB debut. next month.

Aaron Judge arrived at the burning Tropicana Field, but left after being chilled by the Rays.

After hitting four homers in his previous two games heading into Friday, Judge went 0 of 12 with eight strikeouts and one walk as the Yankees lost another series to the Rays.

“He was probably a little bit in and out of the zone, that’s all,” Boone said. “It arrived very hot. Usually he fixes things pretty quickly. He keeps the windows where he has a few tough matches pretty short.

Judge was far from the only Yankee with a quiet streak, but as the reigning AL MVP often managed to put the team on the back foot, it was noticeable.

“He’s one of the best players in baseball, if not the best,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said. “Being able to give him a lot of good pitches, that helped us win the series.”

Another top prospect, center fielder Spencer Jones, was promoted to Double-A Somerset on Sunday after spending the first 100 games of his season at High-A Hudson Valley.

Jones, 22, ranked the No. 1 Yankees prospect by MLB.com, hit .268 with a .787 OPS, 13 home runs and 35 interceptions at High-A while striking out 133 times in 459 plate appearances.

“Organizationally, I think we’re really excited about his future,” Boone said. “It’s been a good first full year for him. I hope now that as he climbs he can finish his season strong. But I think it’s been a successful year for him.
