Japan Takes Three Gold Medals on First Day of Judo Masters in Budapest

At the Judo Masters in Budapest, Japan won three gold medals on the first day of competition.

Budapest is the venue of the Judo Masters this weekend and was therefore the host of all tournament forms of the world tour.

The Japanese Wakana Koga secured the gold medal in the weight class up to 48 kilograms and received it from Princess Tomohito, who is also the ambassador of the World Judo Federation.

Her compatriot Ryuju Nagayama also had reason to celebrate. He won in Budapest in the weight class up to 60 kilograms. After 2017 and 2019, this is his third Masters victory.

Buchard defeats the Olympic champion

In the women’s category up to 52 kilograms, Olympic champion Distria Krasniqi and Amandine Buchard, who won Olympic silver in 2021, faced each other in the final. The fight went into overtime. In this Buchard was awarded a Waza-Ari rating: That was the victory – the second of the French in a Masters tournament.

“I’m always happy when I can compete in the Masters. I love the challenge and fighting against the best judoka. It was very important for me to return to the top here,” said Buchard.

Ryoma Tanaka was also in excellent shape in Budapest. In the fight for gold, the Japanese faced world number one Denis Vieru from the Republic of Moldova. Tanaka won the 140-pound final in a convincing manner, receiving the reward from the hands of Junyuan Zhang of Tianjin Shengzhi Company.

“It’s my first Masters tournament,” Tanaka said. “I’ve worked every day to win this tournament. Now I’ve managed to do that and I’m very happy.”

Klimkait wins gold for Canada

Jessica Klimkait from Canada was unbeatable in the weight class up to 57 kilograms. In the final, she eliminated France’s Sarah Leonie Cysique. The decision was made in extra time. Klimkait received an Ippon rating and had every reason to celebrate.

Mustapha Berraf, ANOCA President and IOC Member, presented the gold medal.

For the Hungarian Reka Pupp it was not enough to win a medal in Budapest, but the youngsters were still happy with their performance. Pupp was fifth in the weight class up to 52 kilograms.
