“It’s because I’m Spanish and Latino”

The Aston Martin pilot claims to be clear about the role assigned to him in “Drive to Survive”, the docuseries based on the world that surrounds the great circus.

The Spanish Fernando Alonsotwo-time Formula 1 world champion and current team driver Aston Martinopened up to Andrew Benson, a BBC journalist, in an interview published today that the Spaniard gave during the last Belgian Grand Prix and in which he admitted feeling on “the dark side” of F1.

“This is a great show: everyone has to play their role, you know? You have to sell the story, you have to say who are the good guys and who are the bad guys,” he said.

“And people in general, the press or whatever, they put me on the side of the bad guys. As if I was doing something wrong,” Alonso said after talking about the docuseries of Netflix “Drive to survive”, in which he considers that he is drawn as one of the bad guys.

He has also explained how “being on that dark side” makes him feel: “I feel good. I don’t care. The most important thing is that people continue to love you and continue to be interested in how many years you have left on your contract, because they may be interested in drive in the future. What happens outside is just part of this circus.”

Comments to Netflix about how he is treated differently for being a “foreigner” in a largely British environment have created a stir.

“It’s always been like that, the same It’s because I’m Spanish and Latino. I didn’t have a lot of support, or we don’t have so much press behind us that they can take everything away. We are just a small country in southern Europe and we swallow all the criticism,” she added.

After his return to racing he says that “the welcome has been great from everyone knowing that I am back in a more competitive position. Also for Aston Martin: everyone is happy that a new team is joining the fight. In We see a lot of green in the stands,” he said.

The Spaniard is happy with his new team, but they are also very happy with him. Lance Strollson of Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll and Alonso’s teammate, has been behind this season in terms of times and results, but recently said “he is motivated to reach that level.”

Alonso, for his part, says he knows what his role is: “Trying to help the team grow in all these areas, trying to help Lance and also helping in everything he can contribute to the team. Because I will run a few more years, but I don’t know how many, not many. And he will race many more years, and he has to lead the team in the future. So I’m happy to help you.”

Finally, he asserted that he does not think “much about the future” and that he focuses on “these years.” His goal is to “continue to grow as a team” and although “we will always find difficulties and some obstacles along the way, the team is very smart in some of the approaches that they are adopting now, and even if it costs us a bit in the middle of the year, that it will make us stronger in the future. So I’m pretty optimistic.”

Alonso and his break with Alpine: “They underestimated me”

In the interview, the 42-year-old pilot also revealed details of his abrupt departure from the French team, where he confessed to feeling underestimated and having had problems with Otmar Szafnauer, recently fired as director of Alpine after the poor results obtained in this 2023.

“That slow pace of the negotiations and not having transcribed what was agreed, in addition to all those comments about my age that were made and that continue to be made… It is the way in which they did things or in which Otmar did the things because, after this year, he shouldn’t talk and he should be calm”, said the Spaniard.

“Alpine has underestimated me 100% and continues to do so. When you are giving the best version of yourself every weekend and have achieved great milestones with Renault, you take doubts about your performance, age and these types of comments personally. I only try to show that I am in the best moment of my sporting career”, concluded Alonso.
