Italy’s Victory over Romania Marks Historic Return of Volleyball to Verona’s Arena

Nearly 10,000 people gathered in the splendid arenas of Verona on Tuesday evening to witness Italy’s victory over Romania (3-0).

For the first time in 35 years, a volleyball match was organized in the Arena of Verona. On May 23, 1988, it was a “friendly” duel between the United States and the USSR which took over the Roman amphitheater built in 30 AD. This Tuesday evening, it was the Italian players and Romanians who had the chance to perform in front of 10,000 spectators on the occasion of the first match of Euro 2023.

The show was great and it started with the hymns already. The production first projected aerial images of the monument before moving to the level of the players, who were suddenly very small in front of the 32-meter-high bleachers.

The president of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, had warned that this match would be different from the others and he hadn’t lied: “The Arena di Verona is a magical and special place that must be shown to the whole world. as an emblem of beauty and majestywhere major artistic, musical and sporting events can be organised, offering them a unique stage”.

The amphitheater, perfectly maintained, is used to receiving big names in Italian song (how can we forget the mythical concert of the immense Adriano Celentano available in full on YouTube?) Few sporting events are organized there, but the show on Tuesday evening will perhaps give ideas to promoters of other “areno-compatible” sports (tennis, basketball, padel, badminton, etc.)

The Euro will continue until September 3 in several countries (Italy, Belgium, Greece and Estonia) but the atmosphere will not be the same since the matches will be played indoors. Switzerland also has an appointment with Bosnia and Herzegovina at the Arena di Monza this Wednesday (6 p.m.).
