Young people from twin towns celebrate the Peace of Westphalia

Münster (SMS) Around 70 young people from Münster’s twin towns have been celebrating the anniversary of “375 years of Peace in Westphalia” since Wednesday (16 August) at the international youth meeting Twin City Games. Münster’s Lord Mayor Markus Lewe received the young people from ten partner cities on Thursday (17 August) in the Hall of Peace. “The Twin City Games are not just a sporting event, but above all a valuable opportunity for young people from different cultures and countries to get to know each other and work together for peace,” said Lewe. “Especially in these times, international youth encounters are a nice signal of confidence and the foundation for a peaceful future.”

The young people from the partner cities of York, Orléans, Kristiansand, Monastir, Rishon LeZion, Fresno, Lublin, Mühlhausen, Enschede, Winnyzja and Münster are preparing for the climax on Saturday, August 19, with various workshops and sporting activities. The city of Münster invites all citizens to do so. Admission is free. The event language is English.

The celebration starts with the Twin City Panel at 11 a.m. on the city festival stage at the Dominican Church. In workshops, the young people worked out various questions that they will put to Lewe and representatives of the twin towns.

The Twin City Games will open at 5 p.m. on the sports campus of the University of Münster, Horstmarer Landweg 68b. In addition to the young people, Lewe and the city leaders of the partner cities are also there to take part in the international sports festival. The young people between the ages of 18 and 27 will show the sports they have trained together, such as lacrosse, floorball, judo, dance fitness, flag football and ultimate frisbee. Afterwards, all visitors can try out the sports presented.

The Twin City Games are organized by the City of Münster’s International Office in cooperation with the City Sports Association of Münster, Münster University Sports and the Münster Peace Office. The project is funded by the EU funding programs “Erasmus+ Jugend” and “INTERREG Deutschland-Nederland”. The service center “Municipalities in One World (SKEW)” from Engagement Global and the NRW Ministry for Federal and European Affairs also support the project.
