Increase in Student Numbers at College and Schools in the Kamouraska-L’Islet Region

The 2023-2024 school year began on August 21 at college in the Kamouraska-L’Islet region. During the following week, it will be the turn of the primary and secondary students. In Kamouraska, at least, an overall increase in student numbers is already being felt.

The increases are modest, but still noteworthy. At Cégep de La Pocatière, 827 students crossed the door of the Pocatois campus on August 21. This is an increase of 13 students from the previous year.

Foreign students number 130. They now represent almost 16% of the student body.

Animal health techniques, specialized education techniques, bioecological techniques and computer techniques are the programs with the most quotas.

“The Gauls have a record number of 130 student-athletes this year,” added Frédéric Busseau, coordinator of the Communications and Student Enrollment Department, in a press release. They evolve in seven disciplines: badminton, basketball, cross-country, football, swimming, volleyball, and the youngest in the running, cheerleading.

The Extra Formation continuing education service is also continuing its momentum of recent years with 439 students registered, ie 70 more than last year. “Since 2021, the overall increase has been 40%,” continues Mr. Busseau.

ITAQ

At the Institut de technologie agroalimentaire du Québec (ITAQ), 311 students began the fall semester at the La Pocatière campus. Last year, there were 289, which represents an increase of more than 7%.

Foreign students are also there, but in fewer numbers than at Cégep de La Pocatière. Ten are counted this year by the ITAQ, in particular in Process Technology and Food Quality.

“This fall, all of our programs are welcoming a cohort of first-year students,” said Caroline Nadeau, external communications and public relations advisor to the general management of the Institut de technologie agroalimentaire du Québec.

Agricultural Business Management and Technologies and Equine Techniques remain the programs with the most quotas at La Pocatière. In the case of the latter, it is the only program of its kind offered in Quebec.

Kamouraska

At the Kamouraska–Rivière-du-Loup School Service Center, the schools of the MRC de Kamouraska, which include those of Saint-Roch-des-Aulnaies and Sainte-Louise, recorded an overall increase in the number of students, from 2329 in 2022-2023 to 2358 this year. However, this increase of 29 students is not felt at all levels.

Of 1,539 children enrolled in primary school last year, there are only 1,516 for 2023-2024, a decrease of 23 students.

In secondary school, the number of students at the Chanoine-Beaudet secondary schools in Saint-Pascal of the La Pocatière high school totals 842 this year, compared to 790 last year, an increase of 52.

New services are also appearing in the Kamouraska territory. Four-year-old kindergarten classes are now open in the Mgr-Boucher schools in Saint-Pascal, Sacré-Coeur in La Pocatière, Étoile-Filante in Saint-Onésime-d’Ixworth and Marée-Montante in Saint-Roch. -des-Aulnaies.

L’Islet

In the schools of L’Islet attached to the Center de services scolaire de la Côte-du-Sud, a general decrease of 38 students was observed this year, for a total of 1,702. This decrease is noticeable at both the secondary and primary levels.

Last year, 1110 children were in primary schools in the region against 1088 this year, a decrease of 22 students. In secondary school, the number of students fell from 630 to 614, a total decrease of 16 for the Bon-Pasteur secondary schools in L’Islet and the Rencontre in Saint-Pamphile.

However, a hockey concentration is emerging for the two secondary schools in the island, in addition to those of the MRC de Montmagny. “Training will take place in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli for players who are also members of the Allied team and who have reached a certain level,” summarizes Isabelle L’Arrivée-Lavoie, communications advisor at the Service Center school in the Côte-du-Sud.

Note that the College of Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pocatière had still not communicated its data at the time of writing these lines.
