Huge Upset: Danish Men’s Doubles Defeat Indian Favorites to Reach Semi-Finals

A huge Danish surprise is a reality – and that has made the roof lighten in the Royal Arena on Friday.

The Danish men’s doubles Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup beat the Indian advance favourites, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, with 21-18, 21-19 and are thus through to the semi-finals of the Badminton World Cup.

Before the match, the Indians were number two in the world rankings, while the Danes were number 11.

However, with initial pressure on the Indians, who committed numerous errors, the Danes recovered well and ended up with a close win in the first set.

In the second set, the flying Danes were under a little more pressure, but managed to correct their course and with terrific play at a high pace, the victory was achieved.

The big-playing Danes made it go crazy with the victory in the Royal Arena, where the Danish fans signed off with a standing ovation and an insane sound level, when the victory was a reality.

And in the interview immediately after the match, it was also two players who enjoyed the scenery to that extent.

“It’s the sickest experience!”

“It’s big artists from abroad who usually stand in a full Royal Arena. And then we’re standing here on a Friday, it’s a completely crazy experience,” said the winning couple to TV 2 Sport right after the match.

With the victory, the bronze medal is already secured, even before the semi-finals at the WC await on Saturday – and the pair are looking forward to stepping out onto the hall floor in the Royal Arena, it says.

And here the in-form men’s doubles has a clear appeal to the Danish spectators:

“It’s great that the spectators just start booing, and there just needs to be more of that tomorrow. It also happens to us when we are China and Indonesia. So there is booing when we are about to serve, and there is shouting. So people just have to let it go. Just fire it all together,’ says the couple to BT
