The national high school comprehensive athletic meet “Flying Young Wings Hokkaido Overall 2023” held in Hokkaido etc. ended on the 21st. Approximately 500 people from Saga prefecture participated in 32 events in 30 sports, and 33 teams and individuals finished in the top eight (best 8). We look back on the hot battles of the North Daichi, where various emotions were born from the high school athletes, such as the joy of their first victory, tears of frustration, and a sense of accomplishment.

This year’s tournament saw the top of the team in two competitions. In the men’s wrestling team, Tosuko won the crown for the first time in two tournaments. Led by captain Motoki Hoki, who won back-to-back titles in the individual 92-kilogram class, he defeated a powerhouse in a stable battle. It was also great that lightweight players such as Kentaro Kono in the 3rd year were able to bring in the ideal development to catch the flow in the early stages. Among individuals, seven men and women, including Hogi, ranked high, demonstrating their high ability to develop.

Sagasho, a women’s judo team, achieved their long-cherished first victory. In 2021, they achieved the second place in the prefecture for the first time, but last summer’s Shikoku overall tournament, which won the spring selection tournament, was defeated in the first match. The players, who have been gaining strength through frustration, showed a spectacular battle that kept their opponents away from the first round with their team power. Three of the four members of the team won the individual competitions, demonstrating their overall strength.

Rhythmic gymnastics men’s Kiyoaki Kanzaki, who won the national selection in March, was second place and left with regret. He was the first in the order of performance, which is said to be difficult to score, and although he performed without any major mistakes, his score was sluggish with 16.800 points. Softball women’s Saga Girls, who won the spring runner-up, lost 0-2 to Hyogo Osumanoura in the semi-finals and finished 3rd. Kendo girl Sanyoki lost to the national champion, but she finished third in the team.

In the archery team, the men’s Waseda Saga and the women’s Kashima both made their first appearances, but did well to advance to the final tournament. Sagasho, a volleyball boy who participated in the national overall for the first time in six tournaments, made it to the top 16 despite losing in the third round of the final tournament. Judo men’s Saga Kita, who stood on the summer national stage for the first time in 56 years, shed tears in the first match, but played a hard fight.

This tournament returned to the format before the new corona disaster, and a big cheer flew from the stands. Compared to the time when there were many restrictions on cheering, such as no spectators and applause due to the corona wreck, the liveliness and enthusiasm returned to the venue. A variety of voices were heard from the players, such as “The cheering gave me strength” and “I felt the pressure of the opponent’s cheering.”

There were many competitions that were just one step away from advancing to the top. This summer’s results will be a big indicator in the boy’s division of the National Athletic Meet (Kokuspo). While player development for the upcoming Saga Koku Sports is showing some results, there shouldn’t be many sports that are satisfied with the results this summer.

Next summer, the All-Japan Athletics Championships will be held in four prefectures in northern Kyushu, including Saga Prefecture. I would like them to continue to improve their skills and develop players with a strong feeling that “there is only one year left.” (Hokkaido overall coverage group)
