Hertha BSC’s U23s Shine as Professionals Struggle: Can They Be Promoted to the 3rd Division?

While the Hertha professionals messed up the start of the season, the U23s are playing a great start. Fans of the club are now asking themselves a special question.

It just works with the U23 from Hertha BSC. The second representation of the capital club was also able to win the fourth game in the new season of the Regionalliga Nordost. On Wednesday, coach Stephan Schmidt’s team beat the Berliner AK 1-0 and thus maintained their lead in the standings.

The professionals at Hertha can only dream of such results at the moment. After three games in the 2nd Bundesliga, the relegated team has zero points. Coach Pál Dárdai’s team didn’t even score a goal. In the final days of the transfer window, Hertha wants to strengthen the sparse midfield in order to reverse the trend and attack the top half of the table.

The success of the U23s is a ray of hope for Hertha supporters in the currently difficult phase of the professionals. At the same time, as a result, many of them are asking the same question:

Can a club’s U23s be promoted to the 3rd division if the pros are playing in the 2nd division?

The answer is yes. The DFB writes: “Basically, second teams from licensed clubs are allowed to play in the 3rd league. The licensed clubs are all clubs in the Bundesliga and 2nd Bundesliga.”

What would happen if Hertha’s professionals were relegated to the 3rd division?

The current success of the U23s is also not entirely independent of the performance of the first guard. Because if the professionals were relegated, the U23s would not only not be promoted to the 3rd division, they would even have to be relegated to the premier league. The DFB: “The statutes stipulate that second teams from third division teams are not allowed to play in the regional league (4th division).”

The example of Hamburger SV

In the 2022/23 season, the U23s of the “Rothosen” played an outstanding season, promotion was within the realm of possibility. But the club decided in March 2023 not to want to get promoted in the case of the regional league championship. The promotion is “not sensible at this point in time from a financial, infrastructural or sporting point of view with regard to the development of young players”.

The “Bild” newspaper wrote of internal calculations, according to which 2.5 to 3 million euros would be due to enable promotion. That was too expensive for those responsible. In the end, the U23s of HSV missed first place anyway. The team was one point behind VfB Lübeck, who were promoted to the 3rd division.
