Heavyweight Wrestlers Shine in Final Day of Judo Masters in Budapest

Heavyweight wrestlers take center stage on the final day of the Judo Masters in Budapest.

The judo masters have returned to Budapest, Hungary, to play the third day of competition. The heavyweight classes have been in the spotlight as some of the best fighters in the world have battled for victory. Will new champions be crowned?

In the -90 kg category, Olympic champion Bekauri faced his compatriot Maisuradze. Despite a tough fight, he scored a tactical victory over the Georgian world champion, crowning himself the double masters champion.

At -78kg, world champion Inbar Lanir of Israel has been on a roll all day, finishing her bouts with speed and efficiency.

The final was no different: the gold medal was awarded in less than a minute against Malonga, from France. In this way, Lanir wins his first Masters title, an impressive accolade that he adds to his collection.

Yasuhiro Yamashita, a member of the IJF Executive Committee and the International Olympic Committee, presented the medals.

“I am one quarter Hungarian and I have family here. For me it is like a second home and it is very nice to be here. The atmosphere is great and everyone is very friendly, I am always happy to come to Budapest,” Lanir told the press.

In the category of less than 100 kg, the Uzbek Turoboyev, former world champion, faced the Israeli Paltchik. A clever change of direction earned Turoboyev a second waza-ari to the delight of his supporters. Uzbekistan’s first gold in over 10 years.

The medals were delivered by IJF Vice President Carlos Zegarra.

Muzaffarbek Turoboyev told the media: “When I won the World Championship medal in Tashkent I opened up on stage and shed tears of happiness. After eight months I have won the Masters. It’s the same feeling, a very happy moment for me to celebrate. here in Hungary.”

France’s Romane Dicko attacked hard and won gold with her tactical judo. Zhou Jinqiang, a member of the IJF and China’s Vice Minister of Sports, presented the medals.

In +100 kg, the Finn Martti Puumalaine enjoyed his best moment. He defeated everyone on his way to the gold medal and the Masters title.

Laszlo Toth, Vice President of the IJF, presented the medals.

The championship was attended by Shohei Ono, double Olympic champion and triple world champion. A great moment for all the fans, especially when he came to sign autographs. An inspiration for everything, since his presence helps promote judo in Hungary and encourage young promises.

Hungarian judo legends rampage against their opponents, inspiring the next generation of judokas. They are an incentive for local judokas and children, who dream of following in their footsteps.
