Forty-six-year-old Selima Sfarová spoke openly about her trauma from sexual harassment in an interview with the French daily L’Equipe. According to her, French coach Regis de Camaret raped her from the age of twelve, the attacks lasted for almost three years.
De Camaret is in prison for other sexual offenses. In 2014, he was sentenced to ten years for the rape of two underage girls at a training camp in the late 1980s and early 1990s in Saint-Tropez.
Sfarová said that during the trial at the time, all the memories of her own suffering came back to her in full force and she fell into depression. She recalled the “dark thoughts” that haunted her during her professional career from 1993 to 2008. “It took me 25 years to admit it to myself and 35 years to be able to talk about it openly,” stated the player, who in 2001, she made it into the top 100 of the world rankings.
