Hannover has to make everything clear in regular time. After goals from Teuchert and Halstenberg, it’s 2-0 just before half-time. But like in Nuremberg (2-2 after 2-0), that’s not enough against the third division team either.
Marcel Halstenberg, who last lost a cup game in 2021 (final with Leipzig against Dortmund): “It’s crazy! We’re going into the lead, you have to bring that over time. We concede goals too easily. It’s just impossible when you’re 2-0 up, 3-2 up, you can’t give up the game.”

Cup captain Neumann knocks Otto clumsily, Zieler representative Weinkauf lets a ball slip through.
Phil Neumann admits: “A free penalty. I wanted to hold him with my arm, he threads well. We’re incapable of closing the sack. We blew that thing today.”
They don’t even get the lucky Teuchert lead (82nd) over the last few minutes. Neumann lets Knipping run, header, 3:3 (86th). In extra time, the squad just saved themselves in a penalty shootout.

Besuschkow and Ernst, two experienced 96 professionals, fail in the penalty shoot-out, and goalkeeper Weinkauf does not become a cup hero either.

Penalties are always a bit of a matter of luck. But what Max Besuschkow does with the first 96 penalty has nothing to do with luck or bad luck – that’s the height! The midfielder chases the ball two meters over the goal into the sky.
Leitl: “We are afraid of losing something. When you’re 2-0 up, you just have to be more confident. We deserved to be eliminated.”
Tough times for Hannover 96 and coach Leitl. Disgrace in the cup, still no win in the 2nd league – and next week it’s off to leaders Rostock.
