Guerschon Yabusele: The Rising Star Defending France’s Tricolor Colors in the World Cup

The World Cup starts in ten days and it’s the perfect time to review the troops who will defend the tricolor colors in Asia. After introducing you to Evan Fournier and Nando de Colo, we take a look at another soldier who will be on the front line in the fight for the world titleGuerschon Yabusele.

Name: Guerschon First name: Yabusele Age: 27 Height: 2.03m Weight: 115 kg Position: (very) strong winger Nickname: Yabu, Yab, The Dancing Bear, the French Charles Barkley (?) On the CV: Roanne, Rouen , Shanghai, G League, Boston, Nanjing, ASVEL and Real Madrid Honors in EDF: Silver medalist at the 2021 Olympic Games and Euro 2022

What a story that of Guerschon Yabusele. At 27, the guy has a more than atypical career: three continents, six championships and eight different teams, this list stinks of the somewhat failed career of a player who finds his place nowhere. But today it is quite the opposite for the Dancing Bear, who has established himself as a part of Real Madrid and the French team for several years. An evolution that commands respect.

Trained at the Choir of Roanne from the age of 14, Guerschon has everything of a great hope of French basketball. Full of talent, well surrounded and determined, he took his first steps in Pro A at only 17 years old. Despite the relegation of his team, his debut at the big leagues is impressive and promising. He revealed himself in Pro B during the 2014-15 season, where he averaged almost 9 points in 23 minutes of play. Performances that earned him a first selection in the France U20 team to compete in EuroBasket 2014.

The following summer, he found the Pro A by signing in Rouen, where he made a place for himself and signed a new big season at the end of which he presented himself for the 2016 NBA draft. Selected in 16th position by Boston, he was sent on loan to the Shanghai Sharks. A choice decried by some, but largely understandable for a 20-year-old kid who only wants to play basketball.

Back in the United States in the summer of 2017, Guerschon tried to establish himself in the Boston squad… without success. He alternates between the NBA and the G League without ever finding a fixed place. Two seasons later, his American dream came to an end when he was cut by the Celtics. And this is where the guy shows great strength of character. He went into exile again in China to find playing time, then returned to prove himself in France in 2020 under the colors of ASVEL. This return to the country, very convincing, earned him a first selection with the Blues in February 2020 to play the qualifications for EuroBasket, where he signs two interesting matches at 13 and 15 points.

This time no doubt, the Dancing Bear has found its hunting ground: Europe. His good performances in Lyon and in the French team opened the doors to Real Madrid, which he joined in the summer of 2021. He quickly established himself as a major player in the Spanish team, scratching a starting spot in January after being voted MVP of the month in the Euroleague. We know that bears live in the mountains, but there, the ascent is unreal.

Since then, Guerschon Yabusele has continued to progress individually… and to win titles: French champion 2021, Spanish champion 2022 and winner of the EuroLeague in 2023, the guy has become a real winning machine. Let’s hope this bodes well for this World Cup, where the interior will have a real role to play with the Blues. This was already the case last year during the Euro, where he had been one of the best French players throughout the competition.

After a big season with Real, Guerschon is one of the most fit French people at the moment. He proved it during the preparation matches by excelling in his role as an interior energizer as mobile as it is powerful. With 15 points on average over the 5 matches played by the French team, he once again showed his ability to score ultra-efficiently (63.4% in shooting including 52.9% from afar) while being valuable in defense. In short, Yabu is in Cannes, and he will have to stay there if he wants to help France win its first world title in a few weeks!
