Greece’s Antetokounmpo Brothers Withdraw from 2023 World Cup Due to Injuries

Another Antetokounmpo will be absent in the 2023 World Cup with Greece. Kostas has been ruled out by the Hellenic Basketball Federation due to injury.

“The last assessment of the doctors who accompanied him in his recovery process was that he will not arrive in time to be in the desired conditions, that is why he has been excluded,” the statement said without revealing what the physical discomfort is.

Last week his brother Giannis confirmed his withdrawal for the tournament to be held in the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia. In this way, Thanasis will be the only Antetokounmpo who will wear the Greek shirt from August 25.

Kostas, who participated in the 2022 Eurobasket, signed a two-year contract with Panathinaikos last month. Before him, he spent six months at Fenerbahce, a team with which he averaged 2.7 points in 14 EuroLeague games.

The 25-year-old forward also spent three seasons in the NBA with the Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Lakers, but only participated in 22 games until 2020-2021.

Meanwhile, Greece will also be without point guards Nick Calathes and Kostas Sloukas. A total of 14 players will travel to Abu Dhabi to play two friendly matches against the United States and Germany, then the head coach Dimitris Itoudis will have to reduce the list to 12 before the World Cup.
