Grab’s “Regeneration Studio” Empowers Kids with Hands-On Glove Making Experience

Grab’s “Regeneration Studio” Holds Parent-Child Experience Event

The glove you made yourself will surely become a treasure. Re-Birth, a baseball glove refurbishment workshop that was born in Ota-ku, Tokyo in 2020 and is working to purchase and recycle gloves that can no longer be used. A hands-on experience event, “Let’s make your own glove! (grotesque),” was held at four stores in Tokyo (Kamata, Futako-Tamagawa, Tama-Nagayama, and Higashimurayama).

At the Futako-Tamagawa store, glove master (craftsman) Tatsuki Abe sits next to the four pairs of parents and children who participated, helping them pass strings through the glove web and fingertips using a special wire. . The work can be completed in 10 to 20 minutes by a glove master, but the new glove has a small hole for the string to pass through and is hard, so the participants had a hard time. It took about an hour and a half to complete it while there were voices such as “Pull it a little harder” and “Do you really want it to pass?”

Abe is also a former baseball boy. He even changed the strings on his catcher’s mitt when he was in junior high school. Because the grab master changes the straps many times a day, it is said that his fingertips may develop blisters or become deformed. “I want children to know how difficult it is to make gloves, and how difficult it is to repair the laces if they break without maintenance. I think it’s also important,” he said.

It is the duty of adults to teach children the importance of the SDGs. Keisuke Iwatani participated in the event with the hope that his son, Sho, who is in the second grade of elementary school, will grow up to be a person who takes care of things. He said, “I myself still have the glove I used when I was a student. I hope people will take good care of it and use it.” Sho-kun said, “(Making glove) was difficult. I want to use it carefully and play an active role.”

Through the glove making experience, “Maybe they will use things carefully”

Kazuyuki Oki, a first-year elementary school student, made the glove-making process his free research theme during his summer vacation. “It was difficult to pull the wire after threading it. It was fun tying the string,” he exclaimed.

His father, Rintaro, said, “I think I learned that there are people who actually make gloves through the experience of making them myself. I think they will take good care of things.” Regarding Reverse’s efforts, he said, “When we were little, we had the feeling that gloves were disposable, and we never thought about recycling them. I think it’s amazing.” Hooray.

The impact of high prices extends to baseball equipment such as gloves. At this event, we heard many voices saying, “The cost of tools has become higher than when we were children.” The financial burden has increased, and there are many people who have no choice but to give up baseball even if they want to play or want to continue.

There are people who make the tools, and there are people who pay the money. Through reverse events, if more children appreciate having a glove in their hands and take care of their tools, the baseball world will become a “sustainable” and better place.
