Gianluigi Buffon Announces Retirement: A Legendary Career Comes to an End

Gianluigi Buffon has announced his retirement from football at the age of 45. The rumor that Buffon would retire has been circulating this week, but today the goalkeeper officially announced the news.

On his social media channels, Buffon posted a nice compilation of some great moments from his career to the tunes of Coldplay’s Viva La Vida. There is a somewhat subtle reference to Superman in the farewell video.

The goalkeeper is an icon of international and Italian football. Buffon holds the record for most caps for the Italian national team (176) and most matches played in Serie A (657).

He had been back in service with childhood sweetheart Parma since 2021, but Buffon was especially furore in Juventus’ goal. In the twilight of his career, he also played briefly for PSG.

He clocked a total of 975 matches in club context.
