In the last preliminary round game on Thursday afternoon at the U23 Baseball European Championship 2023 in Wiener Neustadt, Germany sensationally defeated Italy 13:3 and entered the semi-finals on Friday as the group winner. At the end of the preliminary round, Germany, Italy and France each had a 2-1 record. Due to the great success of the German selection, Germany and France then prevailed against Italy in the tiebreaker calculation. Opponent in the semifinals on Friday at 2:30 p.m. is Great Britain.
The team of national coach Jendrick Speer got off to a dream start against the Squadra Azzurri. Two errors and a 2-run single by Luca Rammelmann ensured a quick 4-0 lead in the first inning. A section later, after another error and a bases-loaded walk by Finn Bergmann, they added two more runs. The hitherto unbeaten Italy responded spectacularly in the third inning and reduced the lead to 3:6 with a 3-run home run by Samuele Gamberini.
An exciting game developed at first, but was finally decided by the German U23 in the fifth and sixth inning and even ended prematurely. Another error and an RBI single from Darrion Richards extended the lead to 8-3 in the fifth round. Another bases-loaded walk by Bergmann, a 2-run double by Rammelmann, an RBI single by Moritz van Bergen and a run after a wild screwed the result to 13:3. This ended the game due to the 10-run rule.
Eight different players scored for the German team in the encounter. Liedtke crossed home plate three times, Richards, Kilian Redle and Bergmann twice each. Rammelmann came up with four RBI.
