Because of his flexibility, Cody Gakpo himself is confused about the best position. But now he has found his most comfortable position at Liverpool.
Gakpo was brought in by Liverpool in January from PSV Eindhoven. For half a season, his performance couldn’t be called brilliant, although it wasn’t too bad either.
The 24-year-old player scored seven goals and three assists from 26 appearances in all competitions. During that period of adaptation, Gakpo was tried to be played as a left striker and in the center.
Positionally, the Dutch national team player is indeed flexible. He can occupy all positions up front, as well as play deeper as an attacking midfielder. To the extent that he himself has difficulty choosing which position is best for him.
“It’s difficult to say my best position, depending on the game or the opponent. I just want to be in a position to get the ball a lot,” he told the Daily Mail quoted Metro.
“I want to get the ball from the center to the front, I just want to score lots of goals and assists,” he added.
At first it was difficult, now Gakpo is starting to feel comfortable playing as a center forward with a false nine role instead of being a number nine. He can stay a lot involved with the ball.
He is fully prepared to take on the position left by Firmino.
“Now that I am playing at Liverpool, I think this is a good position. I have become convinced that being a striker is right for me,” he continued.
“It was difficult at first when I first arrived. He (Klopp) said his expectations of me. In the beginning of course, it took some getting used to, but I’ve been comfortable playing in that position recently.”
