On Sunday, at the European U-20 beach volleyball championship in Riga, the Frenchmen Artūrs Canet and Theo Rotās won the gold medals in the men’s competition, the home duo Kristians Fokerots/Oliver Bulgacs won the third place, while in the women’s competition the Polish Malgožata Cezkowska and Uršula Lunio triumphed in the three-set final.
In the semi-finals, the French duo defeated the home duo Fokerot/Bulgacz 2-0 (21:15, 21:15), and the Austrian duo Timo Hammarberg/Tim Berger beat the Poles 2-1 (23:25, 21:10, 15:7) Philip Leyava and Shimon Bett.
In the final, the French beat Hammarberg and Berger with 2-0 (26:24, 21:15), but in the fight for third place, to the delight of the home fans, Fokerot and Bulgachs won with 2-1 (19:21, 21:14, 15:9) Polish athletes Filipa Lejaw and Shimon Betta.
For women, Cezkowska and Lunio beat Austria’s Lia Berger and Lillie Hoenauer in the semi-finals with 2-0 (26:24, 21:15), while the Swiss duo Miriel Bosard/Leona Kernen beat twin sisters Anna with 2-0 (21:16, 23:21) and Katerina Pavelkova from the Czech Republic.
In the final, Polish women beat Bosar and Kernen with 2-1 (21:17, 13:21, 15:11), but in the fight for bronze medals, Pavelkova beat Berger and Hoenauer with 2-0 (21:11, 21:17).
Hosts Liva Eber and Daniela Konstantinova lost 1-2 (22:24, 21:16, 6:15) to the Spanish duo Sofia Isuskis/Adriana Serrano in the match for the fifth place and finished tied for seventh place, but in the men’s competition they finished 9th-13th. . Dāvis Teteris and Ernests Gūtmanis lost the place to the Ukrainians Anton Moiseyev and Yaroslav Timchenko by 0-2 (15:21, 17:21), finishing in shared 13th place.
Last year, in the Turkish city of Izmir, Konstantinova/Eber became the vice-champions of the European U-20 Masters, while Fokerot/Bulgac won a shared ninth place.
