French Basketball Shines with U20 Men’s and Women’s European Championships

The formation of French basketball is definitely doing very well. Three weeks ago, the U20 men’s team thus became European champions in Greece, notably triumphing over Israel in the final (89-79). There was until then only a trace of a coronation of this category, in 2010, in the history of men’s tricolor basketball. At the heart of a hitherto radiant summer among young people, the French U20s signed the same feat on Sunday by remaining undefeated during the entire European championship in Lithuania.

All with an impressive gap of more than 25 points on average over their seven successes. Elise Prodhomme’s players won the final by outclassing Latvia (85-59). Best hope of the Women’s League this season with Tarbes, Carla Leite (19) was voted MVP of the competition, where she shot 18.4 points (20 points in the final), 4.3 assists and 3.6 rebounds .

Among women, the U20s are used to shining at the Euros, as evidenced by the three previous titles of 2005, 2009 and 2014. “After the title of our U20 men, it is a great pleasure to also see our U20 women on the roof of Europe, appreciates Jean-Pierre Siutat, the president of the French Basketball Federation. This is proof once again of the quality of French education, whether for boys or girls. We hope that these gold medals will inspire the gang of Batum, Gobert and Fournier, who will begin their Basketball World Cup on August 25 in Indonesia against the formidable Canadian team.
