Freiburg in the Black Forest: Coach Streich Makes First Decisions for Competitive Season

Things are getting serious for Freiburg in the Black Forest!

SC Freiburg starts its competitive season against Oberliga club SV Oberachern (Sunday, 3.30 p.m.) in the DFB Cup – time for coach Christian Streich (58) to make the first decisions.

The coach has already met one: Preparation winner Merlin Röhl (21) will play in central midfield!

“Merlin will play alongside Maximilian Eggestein, that’s the way it is,” confirms Streich.

As a result, the 1.92-man will be preferred to Yannik Keitel (23) and is also in pole position for the first Bundesliga matchday at TSG Hoffenheim (September 18, 3:30 p.m.) because regular player Nicolas Höfler (33 /red lock) because it is still missing.

The reason: Röhl excelled in preparation and Keitel, like the other U21 internationals, is a little behind according to his coach.

Shock moment around Atubolu

However, it is unclear whether the new number one Noah Atubolu (21) can play.

“He got stuck in training yesterday and had some stress on the inner ligament. But now the all clear has been given. We’re going to talk again about whether he’ll play on Sunday or not,” explains his coach.

A serious break should probably not threaten, but the start is of course different than hoped for. Returnee Florian Müller (25) is ready.

Newcomers Junior Adamu (22/patellar tendon syndrome) and Daniel-Kofi Kyereh (27/rehab after a cruciate ligament rupture) will definitely be out.

But Captain Christian Günter (30) is back on board and even ready for the first eleven!

Streich: “When he was injured, he straightened his broken arm on the pitch himself, it was at a 90-degree angle, which looked really bad in the pictures. Now he has two records and is again a starting XI option. The doctors did a great job.”

Streich plays poker around the system

Streich didn’t want to commit to the game system (chain of 3 or 4), gambles: “We tested both, I’m satisfied with both.”

One thing is much more important for him: “We want to be flexible and change it depending on the situation. That makes us unpredictable and also makes us happy. What I like best is when afterwards nobody can say in which system we played, we just played well.”

No matter in which arrangement, Streich will definitely send his entire A-Elf into the race, provided that he is fit.
