Freiburg Coach Christian Streich Not Yet Satisfied with Personnel Situation, Especially U-21 National Players

The personnel situation also improved in the victorious Freiburg dress rehearsal against FC Empoli (2-0). Coach Christian Streich is not yet satisfied, however, and sees a need to catch up, especially with the U-21 national players.

Saturday’s test against the Italian first division team also brought positive results in terms of personnel. The recently injured offensive forces Ritsu Doan (knee) and Roland Sallai (adductors) were in the starting XI and lasted 90 and 79 minutes respectively. “It was good that they could kick for so long, but they were injured. Now let’s wait and see how the muscles look. It was okay with Roland and Ritsu, but it will be a different game in Hoffenheim,” said Streich Look at the start of the league in just under two weeks.

Streich is not yet satisfied despite the improved personnel situation

Despite the significantly improved personnel situation compared to the final week of the training camp, the Freiburg coach is not yet satisfied and declared after the three times 45 minutes against Empoli: “We still have enough work to do.” On the one hand there would be Vincenzo Grifo, who was absent due to an infection. Last year’s top scorer and Italian national player was missed, especially when Michael Gregoritsch missed a penalty early on. Can Grifo expect a longer downtime? “No, I hope not, he was still training on Friday and was ill on Saturday.”

The 58-year-old is not happy with the level of performance among the German U-21 national players, who took part in the European Championships in Georgia at the end of June and therefore only joined the SC team at the start of the training camp on July 20th. While the training deficit with the new regular keeper Noah Atubolu is not so important due to the position, Streich named Kenneth Schmidt and Noah Weißhaupt, who started training later because of an eardrum operation: “They are not even close to 90 minutes. That’s not good, but that’s the way it is. They didn’t play much for the U21s either.” Yannik Keitel was in the starting XI three times at the messed up European Championships, but was only part of the B formations at SC.

Günter with comeback after broken arm

In this, Christian Günter also collected 45 minutes of action on Saturday in the “Extra-Spiel”, which was lost 2-1, but was previously substituted on in the regular game in the 79th minute. A delightfully quick comeback after the captain broke his arm in the first summer test against GC Zurich. Despite all the joy, according to Streich, the following also applies to the perennial favorite, who has been outstanding in physical terms for years: “He needs training sessions and games.”

The season starts on Sunday with a home cup game disguised as an away game in the venerable Dreisam Stadium against Oberliga club SV Oberachern. Six days later, SC made a guest appearance at TSG Hoffenheim for the league opener. “First of all, we’re playing in the cup and then we have to line up in Hoffenheim in such a way that you don’t know beforehand that you’ll have to replace six or seven players because they won’t get through,” Streich says, looking ahead and citing the current top priority for the pros and himself and his staff: “We have to make sure that everyone is in good physical and athletic shape as quickly as possible.”

Adamu still needs a while

Particularly bitter: With the new signing Junior Adamu, it will take a while. The striker brought in from Salzburg has still not completed a single team training session. When can this be expected? “Uncertain,” says Streich: “It’s gotten better, he’s training on the pitch with Uwe Vetter.” In the individual units with the physiotherapist, Adamu, who is plagued by a patellar tip syndrome, tries to work his way up. Despite the injury, the 22-year-old had played regularly in Austria in his last few months – much to Streich’s annoyance.
