Former Teammates Reunite: Mats Rits and Jan Vertonghen’s Return to Anderlecht

The can of beer has been exchanged for a bottle of water and they both look a lot older and more mature.

After 11 years, Mats Rits and Jan Vertonghen celebrated their “reunion” as teammates. Then at Ajax, now at Anderlecht – the Brussels club even reconstructed an old photo of the duo on Sunday afternoon.

It was one of the many reasons why Vertonghen could laugh.

The defender scored the crucial second goal against Westerlo, putting Anderlecht at the top with 9 out of 12.

According to the Red Devil, a merit of the sporting leadership: “They have done a great job”, DAZN Eleven said afterwards.

“I think this selection is very complete, a mix of young and old, with almost all positions that are occupied twice. You see the quality in training, it’s a pity that we can’t show that every time in the match.”

On Anderlecht’s social media, Vertonghen also looked back on his great goal – which can be viewed below.

“I was a bit lucky. I pretended to pass the ball to Amadou Diawara and hoped the defender was counting on it. Then I was able to turn away well and decided to take my chance with an all-or-nothing shot. (laughs) So it was all, a good goal.”
