Former Russian basketball player Sergei Babkovtwice world runner-up with his team and who played for several seasons in the Unicaja Mlaga and he also joined Joventut and the German League, he has died suddenly in his country at the age of 56, the Andalusian club reported in a statement.

Babkov, was a member of Unicaja from 1994 to 1999, when he directed the Javier Imbroda compositor team, playing a total of 213 games during that period with an average of 16.6 points and 38% in triples. In 1995 he was runner-up in the League ACB with Unicaja in that anthological final against Barcelona that it took five games to determine the champion.

The Russian player played in his country and in the German League before making the jump to Unicaja and concluding his period in Spain at Joventut, to return to the Russian League where he retired in 2001. He was international with Russia 32 games, achieving two world silver medals and one silver and one bronze in different European Championships.

Serguei Babkov was in Malaga last May to witness one of the semifinal matches between Unicaja and Bara. Unicaja lamented the death on their social networks with a message: “Today we are in mourning. Serguei Babkov has passed away. He is leaving a legend of the Club and a very dear person. From Unicaja Basketball we send a big hug to his family and close friends. Rest in peace, Serguei”.
