Football transfer ticker: Yann Sommer leaves FC Bayern Munich

goalkeeper Yann Sommer leaves the FC Bayern again after around seven months and, as expected, joins the Italian first division club Inter Milan at. According to media reports, the Munich team will receive around six million euros for the 34-year-old. The Italian Champions League finalist had since the departure of André Onana looking for a new number one in goal.

On Instagram, Sommer wrote before the official announcement that an exciting journey was coming to an end. He also thanked his teammates, coaches, support staff and fans of FC Bayern, “who made my time at this big club an experience that I will never forget”.

Sommer was in the winter break for around nine million euros Borussia Monchengladbach came as a replacement for the injured Manuel Neuer and was given a contract until mid-2025. During his flying visit, the Swiss goalkeeper appeared on the pitch in 25 games. He conceded 31 goals and kept eight clean sheets. There were no really big mistakes, but Sommer never radiated the sovereignty of Neuer.

The 34-year-old had pushed for a farewell as his personal ambitions were not compatible with Neuer’s imminent return. The EM 2024 in Germany is Sommer’s big goal, which he doesn’t want to jeopardize with a reserve role and a lack of match practice. “We understand and respect Yann Sommer’s desire to seek a new challenge at Inter Milan because he wants to be the number one goalkeeper in the long term,” said Bayern’s CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen.

Bayern now have to intensify their search for a goalkeeper. Neuer is still training individually and will miss the start of the season. In the test match victory against the AS Monaco stand Sven Ulrich in goal on Monday. The clubless David De Gea and David Raya from the FC Brentford should still be at the top of the list of the Munich transfer task force. (dpa)
