Status: 01.08.2023 1:16 p.m

Rot-Weiss Essen got involved in the transfer market during the summer break. In the second third division year, the team wants to place itself in midfield. RWE opens the season in Halle on Friday evening.

They are not afraid of contact at SC Verl and Rot-Weiss Essen. Just under a week before the start of the third division, which will open on Friday evening with the duel between Hallesches FC and Rot-Weiss Essen, the two division competitors met again for a test match. In general, it is expected that the two opponents will be roughly on an equal footing over the course of the season. It also looked like that in the test, which the losers narrowly won 1-0 in the end.

RWE revealed a weakness that is not entirely new to the people of the Ruhr area: They didn’t move dangerously enough in attack. The freshly signed Lucas Brumme (who came from Wehen Wiesbaden) missed twice after being substituted on in the second half of the game. And also substitute Friessner Montas and Ron Berlinski failed in the final minutes.

Six-digit transfer fee paid

The Rot-Weiss have signed eight new players so far, three times they had to shell out a fee: around 100,000 euros had to be paid to FC Augsburg after staying up in the league in order to sign Felix Götze – as contractually agreed – on a permanent basis. Around 40,000 euros were paid for Verl’s Vinko Sapina and striker Leonardo Vonic came from 1. FC Nürnberg II for around 90,000 euros.

Being Felix Bastians (r.)

They also think highly of Marvin Obuz, who moved to Hafenstrasse on loan from 1. FC Köln. After his last loan to Holstein Kiel, where he was only able to gain little match practice, Obuz did not let himself be defeated, as he revealed to “Reviersport” in the training camp. “The year definitely got me further. I didn’t get the assignments in Kiel that I had hoped for, but I’ve matured a lot and got a much clearer head. I’m totally convinced of the move to Essen. “

Financial hole – trouble with the fan scene

However, the sporting orientation is only one aspect that RWE is currently dealing with. The association’s annual general meeting in July caused and continues to cause a stir, with a big minus in the cash register being reported.

3.6 million euros! This amount was the minus at Rot-Weiss Essen for the 2022 financial year. In an open letter, the fan scene then wrote of a “slap in the face for all red-whites” and demanded the resignation of the entire supervisory board. “In our club, after the bankruptcy in 2011, it was customary to only plan with money and spend the money that is really there.”

criticism of the coach

At the end of last season, coach Christoph Dabrowski was also in the focus of supporters. Part of the fan community called for the replacement of the trainer in the spring when the good results to date failed to materialize. However, the club remained steadfast, held on to the coach and later celebrated staying up in the league.

Dabrowski summed it up: “I can withstand pressure and have experienced so much in this football business. From day one I felt a lot of trust from the people in charge. There isn’t a piece of paper between them, I felt their support at every phase of the season.”
