The Republic of Korea and Chinese Taipei were part of the initial draw announced in May but pulled out earlier this month. A total of six basketball teams – India, Bahrain, Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia and Syria – will play in a single-legged round-robin league format in the Asian leg of the pre-qualifying tournament for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
France qualified by virtue of being the hosts. The FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, co-hosted by the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia from August 25 to September 10, will offer seven places. The remaining four slots will be sealed through the final FIBA Olympic qualifying tournament scheduled next year. Basketball has been a medal event at the Summer Olympics since Berlin 1936. The Indian men’s basketball has appeared in the Olympics once, finishing 12th at the Moscow 1980 Games.
Kazakhstan, 65th in the FIBA basketball rankings, are the best-ranked team in the tournament followed by Saudi Arabia (68), Syria (72), India (82) and Bahrain (84). The Indian men’s basketball team will be led by Vishesh Bhriguvanshi. Promising youngster Pranav Prince and the experienced duo of Muin Bek Hafeez and Amjyot Singh will be the players to watch out for in India’s 12-member squad. A total of 12 teams will feature in the basketball tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympics next year.
