“Coming of age is a great achievement. We have wanted year after year to show the great diversity of the short film, all types of cinema, themes and aesthetic techniques, have a place in Shorts México. We are very happy to grow, although paradoxically we have had less support,” Jorge Magaña, founder and general director of the film meeting, told El Sol de México during the announcement.

With 65 physical and virtual venues, the event will be present practically throughout the Mexican Republic. Among them are the Cineteca Nacional, the Centro Cultural Universitario, La Casa del Lago, as well as the television stations Canal 22, Canal 11, TVUNAM, TV Mexiquense, and the platforms Shorts México/Wahu, FilminLatino, Filmoteca de la UNAM, and Festhome. , in addition to social networks.

TRIBUTES TO GREAT WOMEN

The festival will recognize the work of great women filmmakers, who have also ventured into the short film format, including the director Ángeles Cruz and the producers Erika Ávila and Liliana Reyes.

“I feel very honored, I have three short films as a scriptwriter and director. My cinematographic apprenticeship has been part of it, but I think it is one of the most complicated and difficult formats to carry out, because you have to be very forceful and have an impact and communicate something in a very short time.

“I think that what Shorts México does is unique, since it is the only short film festival. That is why I believe that it must be valued on many occasions, it is the only window for us to discover the work of established and young directors and actors,” said the director of the film Nudo Mixteco, Ángeles Cruz.

The festival program includes the celebrations of the 60 years of CUEC, the 40 years of IMCINE, the Buñuel Challenge, a sample of Italian shorts, as well as a retrospective for the 18 years of the festival. There will also be a brief sample of feature films made up of shorts, with the films Corazón de plata and Home Is Somewhere Else.

SKILLS

With more than 47 prominent figures and specialists from the film industry, the festival presents 13 sections of films in competition. Among them are the Mexican and Ibero-American Fiction, Animation and Documentary competitions; Screenplay, Press Award and the national competitions of Work in Progress and Pitching.

The actor Hernán Mendoza, who will be part of the jury, referred to the importance of festivals like these as well as the need for support in Mexican cinema. “I am very happy with the work that Shorts México is doing, Mexican cinema is highly recognized internationally, unfortunately, in our country we do not have access. We are a country that is unfortunately very television-oriented”.

The actress Natasha Dupeyrón will also be present as part of the jury, who has dabbled in shorts, and even participated in the festival last year, and commented on how difficult it can be to make short films, since it is a format that is not considered much.

THEY DENOUNCE NULL SUPPORT FROM IMCINE

During the presentation, Jorge Magaña criticized the fact that this edition did not have the support of the Mexican Institute of Cinematography, despite the fact that he thanked the collaboration of other institutions, including the Trust for the Promotion and Development of Mexican Cinema in the Federal District, PROCINE and the UNAM.

“We did not have the support of IMCINE, which does seem unfortunate to me. Since they told us that they were not going to give it to us, I am very outraged. In the case of IMCINE, it is important that it make this type of call for support, which it does have, the director is very open to dialogue and to evolve the rules of the funds, but it was the subject of the jury. It is not just about the festival, but about trying to get showcases for the actors, actresses, casting people, cameramen and so many people who work, between 30 and 100 people who are behind a short film”, said the general director of the festival .
