Walking in front of the microphones was much easier for Thomas Tuchel on Friday evening than six days ago. His FC Bayern won the opening game of the 61st Bundesliga season comfortably 4-0 against Werder Bremen and thus provided the perfect answer to the 0-3 draw against Leipzig in the Supercup. “We didn’t have any ups and downs,” recognized Tuchel on the DAZN microphone and attributed the increase in performance to it. His team delivered a game “at a high level” “in terms of concentration, energy, compactness and commitment”.
FC Bayern only wobbled briefly after the break, Bremen sniffed at a possible equalizer in this phase, but missed three chances to finish. Tuchel said: “We were a bit sloppy, lost second balls. We got through the ten minutes together.” The game in the Weser Stadium was open for 74 minutes, also because Kingsley Coman had only hit the post in the meantime – but then Harry Kane was there: The record transfer from Munich scored his second shot on goal for the record champions for the first time and made everything clear.
Praise for Goretzka and Kimmich
In addition, Kane also provided the template to make it 1-0 through Leroy Sané before he had to leave the field shortly before the end due to muscular problems. “Good is not enough, that’s absolutely great,” said Tuchel about the Bundesliga debut of his number 9. Kane’s goal was “a classic”, “he leaves the option open for a long time that the goalkeeper doesn’t know which corner to go to he shoots.” Bremen’s Jiri Pavlenka was finally defeated in the left corner, then Werder ran out of breath and Munich screwed the result up.
What made Tuchel most happy in the end? “The fact that we kept a clean sheet and took the lead hasn’t happened in a long time. It’s good for everyone.” The counter-attack protection, which mostly worked this time, also played a major role in Bremen, thanks to Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka, who started somewhat surprisingly for Konrad Laimer. “The two took good care of each other today,” said Tuchel.
When playing with the ball, however, players and coaches first have to get to know each other properly. “The characteristic of our midfielders is that they move a lot, are on the ball a lot and make a lot of contacts. I’m more familiar with the fact that the game moves around the central midfielders. We still have to adapt to each other,” said Tuchel. In the meantime, the duo has collected enough arguments for a renewed nomination for the starting eleven.
Neuer soon back in team training
Manuel Neuer is also likely to be an option in the near future. Tuchel expects his regular keeper to return to team training in two to three weeks. “The prognosis has shortened significantly,” said the Bayern coach, who until then was counting on Sven Ulreich as number 1.
