There is no official result target for this year’s European Championships in your own country, although a possible Olympic qualification for Paris 2024 should of course be floating around in people’s heads. “The possible Olympic qualification is nice to have,” explained the experienced co-captain Nike Lorenz. “The focus,” the Berliner continued, “is clearly on the tournament itself.”

Slowly but surely, the great disappointment of the Olympic Games in Tokyo should have evaporated. The DHB ladies finished fourth in the 2022 World Cup and have now started more than successfully in the home European Championships on the Lower Rhine. The team led by national coach Valentin Altenburg won 4-0 against Scotland two days ago. “It was so much fun playing in front of these unbelievable fans,” said double goalscorer Zimmermann. “A dream has come true. When I was little, I said I wanted to play here for Germany.”
