European champion England had to work up a sweat to reach the quarter-finals at the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. After a red card for top scorer Lauren James, Nigeria could only shake off in the penalty shootout.

England had closed the first round with a perfect report (9 out of 9), Nigeria pushed through with 5 out of 9. The difference on the field was smaller.

The 11-time African champion made it quite difficult for England. Nigeria fought hard and hit the crossbar more than once.

Just before the end of regulation time, England had to go on with ten players. Lauren James had fully (and consciously) stood on her opponent’s back. After the intervention of the VAR, the attacker received a red card.

England and Nigeria failed to score in 90 minutes. The extensions didn’t help either.

Penalty kicks. After a miss by Stanway, England, Daly, Greenwood and Kelly all hit for England. Nigeria missed twice: 4-2.

England will meet the winner from Colombia – Jamaica in the quarter-finals. That match is scheduled for tomorrow.
