Italy has a great start to the European Paralympic Championships in Rotterdam (Ned), which are also giving away passes for Paris 2024. World record for Elisabetta Mijno and European record in mixed for Mijno-Travisani. The grids for the preliminary rounds and those for the Paralympic qualifying tournament have been defined.

For Italy, the European Paralympic in Rotterdam (Ned) begins with a world record set by Elisabetta Mijno and the European mixed team record thanks to Mijno and Stefano Travisani.

At the end of the 72 arrows of the ranking round, the Piedmontese archer with the Fiamme Azzurre scored 674 points, improving by 17 points the previous record of the three-time Paralympic champion Zahra Nemati. Mijno therefore concluded the qualification of the women’s open recurve in first place, leaving behind the second classified, the Turkish Segul, by 73 points.
To this record is added the European one signed by Mijno and Stefano Travisani in the mixed recurve team, with 1283 points: improving the record set by Russia by 19 points, just 3 points from the world record of China.

THE QUALIFICATION OF THE AZZURRI – If in the open recurve Elisabetta Mijno finished at the top of the rankings with 72 arrows in the ranking round, Veronica Floreno and Enza Petrilli finished in 6th and 7th place with 583 and 573. The individual eliminations tomorrow morning start from the quarterfinals. These are the challenges that await the blues: Mijno-Poimenidou (Gre) and Floreno-Olszewska (Pol). Floreno got through the first round by beating Eroglu (Tur) 6-4, while Enza Petrilli went out in the round of 16 against Slovenian Lavrinc (Slo), winning 7-3.
In the men fourth place went to Stefano Travisano with 609, whose score together with that of Mijno earned the continental record, thirteenth Giuseppe Verzini with 558 and fifteenth Roberto Airoldi with 552. After the first qualifying round Verzini beat Jinjikadze (Geo) 6- 0 and will face Stefano Travisani tomorrow in the round of 16, while Airoldi won in the playoff 6-5 (9-8) with Chmielewski (Pol) and tomorrow he will face Ciszek (Pol).
In the women’s Compound open Eleonora Sarti is fourth with 679, Maria Andrea Virgilio seventh with 667 and Giulia Pesci eleventh with 642. At the end of the first qualifying round Pesci was eliminated in the round of 16 by Grinham (Gbr) 139-136, while Sarti and Virgilio surpassed Malykh (Ukr) 130-125 and Leonard (Irl) 140-135 respectively. The two blues will face Yorulmaz (Tur) and Paterson Pine (Gbr) in the quarterfinals tomorrow morning.
The world champion Matteo Bonacina closes qualifying at the top of the standings with 691, Paolo Cancelli is ninth with 672 and Christian Seneca fifteenth with 666. Bonacina tomorrow faces the winner between Kazimov (Aze) and Iurescu (Rou), Cancelli the Dutch Klaasen and Seneca against Turan (Tur).
In the men’s W1 excellent third place for Paolo Tonon with 645, seventh Maurizio Panella with 622 and tenth Francesco Tomaselli with 585. Azzurri derby in the first elimination round, where Panella overtook Tomaselli 135-128. Tomorrow Panella faces Aydin (Tur) and Tonon with Saych (Gbr) in the quarterfinals.
In the women’s category, Asia Pellizzari takes first position, closing the 72 arrows with 617 points and Daila Dameno is fifth with 583. Daila Dameno was beaten in the quarterfinals by Musilova (Cze) 130-122 and the Czech athlete will be the opponent of Pellizzati tomorrow in the semifinal.

TEAM ELIMINATORS – In the open double recurve Travisani and Verzini obtained the third score (1167 points) and on Thursday they will challenge Azerbaijan (Aliyev, Musayev) in the quarterfinals. Tomorrow, match in the quarterfinals, again against Azerbaijan (Abdullayeva, Musayev), for the mix composed by Mijno-Travisani.
In the Mijno-Floreno women’s doubles on August 18 they will face Turkey (Eroglu, Sengul) directly in the final.
In the men’s double compound Bonacina-Cancelli, with the first place in qualifying, await the winner between the Czech Republic and Austria in the quarterfinals, in the women’s compound Sarti and Virgilio will challenge Great Britain (Grinham, Stretton) in the semifinals, while in the mixed Sarti and Bonacina, thanks to the best score in qualifying (1370) they await the winner between France and Poland in the semifinal.
In the men’s doubles W1 Panella-Tonon the final will be played directly against Turkey (Aydin, Hekimoglu); in the Tonon-Pellizzari mixed team they finished with the best score (1262) and will face the Czech Republic (Musilova, Davidek) in the semifinals.

PARALYMPIC QUALIFICATION – The 72 ranking round arrows have also defined the direct clashes for the Paralympic qualifying tournament which will be played between 17 and 18 August.

On Friday 18 August, all three blues from the compound open will be competing to win the passes for Paris 2024 that Italy still lacks, starting from the quarter-finals: Giulia Pesci against Leonard (Irl), Maria Andrea Virgilio against Dudka (Pol ) and Eleonora Sarti against Malykh (Ukr).

In the men’s W1, in search of the second blue pass, there will be Maurizio Panella against Saych (Gbr) and Francesco Tomaselli with Antonios (Fin) from the quarterfinals.

The same goes for the men’s open recurve: Italy aims for the second pass starting on Thursday 17 from the round of 16 with Roberto Airoldi against Naumchuk (Ukr) and Giuseppe Verzini with Chmielewski (Pol).
In the women’s W1 Daila Dameno is running, who will challenge the Turkish Misir in the semifinal: the winner will face the British Kingstone in the final for the gold.
Also on Thursday, a qualifying tournament to obtain the second card in the men’s compound: Christian Seneca starts from the round of 32 against Coare (Rou), while Paolo Cancelli had access to the second round where he will challenge the winner of the match Nabiyev (Aze)-Vrzal (Cze).
