Duh, Man City Failed Again in the Community Shield

London

Manchester City lost to Arsenal in the Community Shield. As a result, the Citizens continued their recent bad record there.

City as Premier League champions and also the FA Cup met Arsenal as Premier League runners-up at Wembley, Sunday (6/7/2023) evening WIB. City appeared dominant from the early minutes to suppress Arsenal.

However, they actually had difficulty creating clean opportunities at least until the start of the second half. City could break the deadlock in the 77th minute through Cole Palmer who entered as a substitute.

City’s victory broke up in the 111th minute when Leandro Trossard broke into Stefan Ortega’s goal. The match must go to the high-five after ending 1-1 at normal time.

City were unlucky as two of their first three shots were missed, only Bernardo Silva was successful. Arsenal won 4-1 after four executors did their job well.

This defeat is an alarm for City that the 2023/2024 season will not be easy after winning the treble last season. This also stops City from winning six titles in 2023.

It seems that the Community Shield is still a scourge for Manchester City after losing in three consecutive editions since 2020. That year, City lost to Arsenal, then lost to Leicester in 2021, and last year to Liverpool.

City equaled Manchester United’s poor record as the first team to lose in three Community Shield matches. MU did it from 1999 to 2001. So far City have won this event only six times, the last being in 2019.

“Yes, we almost won. It’s very disappointing to concede a goal in the final minutes. We have to get up and go again,” Cole Palmer told ITV.

“Pep always said that I had to be myself when I had the ball. I stabbed from the side and aimed for the far post. Thank God it was a goal.”
