Dominic Thiem will not compete at the ATP 250 tournament in Winston-Salem.
The Lower Austrian has to cancel his start at the last test before the US Open due to gastrointestinal flu. The organizer announced this a few hours before the planned first round match against Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech. Thiem’s substitute is Omni Kumar from the USA.
What this means for Thiem’s appearance at the US Open next week is still unclear.
Ofner meets teenagers
This means that there is only one local player left in Winston-Salem. Austria’s 27-year-old number one Sebastian Ofner meets 18-year-old US wildcard player Alex Michelsen for the first time.
After this tournament, Ofner and Thiem have planned to continue their journey to the US Open, which begins on Monday in New York.

An Austrian duel could come in the second of three qualifying rounds. Jurij Rodionov (7) would first have to defeat the German Maximilian Marterer (24), Maximilian Neuchrist the American Patrick Kypson.
