Dominic Altmaier Puts up a Fierce Fight Against Alexander Zverev at US Open

“Daniel has talent for getting good players to play badly against him. That’s also an art,” explained Alexander Zverev after the match.

During the break Altmaier had his right hand treated. “If the thumb of the batting hand is injured, that’s really bad,” said Becker.

Good for Altmaier: But he was able to continue playing – and improved. The world number 53. made fewer mistakes, Zverev unbuttoned the service to 3: 2. An advantage that the challenger couldn’t let go of and subsequently converted into a set equalizer.

Zverev manage decisive breaks

The match took place at eye level, although Zverev was more dangerous on the return than the Kempener. That paid off in the ninth game. The Olympic champion made the break to 5: 4 and sealed the set with his own serve.

Zverev finally turned onto the winning road with the early break (2: 1) in the fourth set. Altmaier tried everything to get his foot in the door again, but after 3:42 hours the favorite from Hamburg made the progress perfectly.

“Tennis is a lot of emotion. You can find it in a match, you can lose it. I think I found it very well in the third and fourth sets. It clicked there and then it was clearer,” said Zverev. “I tried my best,” said Altmaier, he “takes more positives from New York than negatives.”
