Dismantling of HSB’s Tennis Hall: Plans for a New Sports Facility on the Rauhbuch

The HSB’s single-court tennis hall on the Rauhbuch is currently being dismantled. It is located on Richard-Wagner-Straße on a site that the sports club has leased from the city of Heidenheim. Next to it is a training ground for the HSB baseball department and the outdoor fields for the tennis department. The hall has not been in use for years, although the tennis department still sees a need for training and playing areas today. However, the simple hall could no longer be heated sensibly due to the high energy loss to the environment and there were also no sanitary facilities and changing rooms.

No pitch for caravans

First, in 2019, the tennis department, which owned the hall, made an attempt to convert the tennis hall into a parking area for caravans and thus generate rental income. However, this could not be approved by the city, since it is a designated sports area on which no business can be operated. A preliminary building application regarding a change of use that had already been submitted to the town hall was withdrawn by the tennis department. “Then the tennis department handed over the increasingly ailing hall to the HSB main club free of charge, which is now alone in charge of the further proceedings,” says Erwin Bachmann, one of the two chairmen of the HSB tennis department.

Gym is urgently needed

“We need sports space in all variations,” says Stefan Mau, Managing Director of the HSB. Actually, they wanted to get the hall back in shape, but this was no longer possible because the building was dilapidated. “We were able to sell the hall to someone who wants to rebuild it,” reports Mau. After the dismantling by the new owner, the sports club plans to build a new hall on the site, which should primarily be suitable for the roller sports department.

Stefan Mau, HSB Managing Director

According to the HSB managing director, several variants are currently being examined. Basically, the building should cover around 640 square meters and be equipped with a hard floor suitable for roller sports. Other uses by “new, simple sports” could also be possible, says Mau. He thinks of climbing, bouldering, American football or streetball. A so-called cold hall is planned, which has no heating and is only to be equipped with sanitary facilities that are to be “as simple as possible”. Mau hopes that the existing sanitary facilities can be used by the baseball and tennis facilities.

Since it is supposed to be a very simple hall, Mau is currently expecting construction costs of “at least 200,000 euros”. Exact calculations are not yet available, as cost estimates are only just being obtained. The Württemberg State Sports Association (WLSB) supports the construction of sports facilities with 30 percent of the eligible costs, Stefan Mau expects the same amount as a subsidy from the city of Heidenheim. If sponsorship money then flows in, the HSB would have to shoulder its own share of 30 percent. “It’s affordable for a club,” says Mau.

First, however, the plans must be presented and approved at the association’s general meeting. This will take place on Friday, October 13th. According to Mau, it should also be clear by then what exactly the plans for the new sports hall on the Rauhbuch will look like.

Playing tennis in summer and winter

The tennis department of the HSB has eight clay courts on the Rauhbuch, which are available to members of the department, but can also be tried out by non-members with a trial card (e-mail to tennis[email protected])

In addition, the tennis department in the HSB Sports Park operates a two-court tennis hall that was thoroughly modernized a few years ago and, according to the department head, is very well occupied. It is used not only by members, but also by other clubs and external players.
