Discover the Thrilling Kin-Ball: A Sport That Unites Three Teams on the Field

This summer, the JDE introduces you to four lesser-known sports. Individual or collective, on land or in the water, we cast a wide net. The fourth is the Kin-Ball. A collective sport that brings together three teams at the same time and a huge ball on its field.

Kin-Ball is a sport that brings together three teams of four players on its field. The teams compete in a duel. The objective of the game is to catch the huge ball 1m22 in diameter.

The engaging team (attack) chooses the opposing team who will have to catch the ball before it hits the ground (defense). To do this, she announces the word “Omnikin” followed by the color of the chosen team (blue, gray or black). The third team then becomes a spectator.

The attacking team carries the ball and one of its players hits it. The defending team tries to catch the ball with any part of the body. The knee pads worn by the players allow them to throw themselves to the ground. Which can give spectacular defenses.

If the ball hits the ground, the attacking team and the spectator team earn a point. If the defending team catches the ball, they become the kicking team and play continues.

The duration of a game varies according to the categories.

“Kin-Ball, the team sport par excellence”

Currently, there are 12 Kin-Ball clubs in Wallonia. They are mainly located in the provinces of Liège, Walloon Brabant and Brussels.

“There are more than 700 days aged from 8 to 66 years old. But we would like to see other clubs spring up,” confided Alexandre Jacob, general coordinator of the Belgian Francophone Federation of Kin-Ball. He tells us about this sport that he has been practicing for almost twenty years.

“In terms of cooperation, it’s the team sport par excellence,” he explains. Players must be focused, responsive and communicate as much as possible. The big advantage is accessibility, right from the start. We play, and we progress. We have the opportunity to evolve and break through more easily. More than the power, what makes the quality of a player is the speed of execution. The game is fast. We have to move quickly, changing direction all the time”.

But one of the most important things in Kin-Ball is fair play. When you lack fair play, you get a penalty point. We can add four. Or rather, subtract them, because they are counted with the overall results. “This means that if a team has won four points during the match, but has lost four fairplay points, it ends up at zero, explains Alexandre Jacob. Our sport requires a lot of respect and a good spirit. It conveys good values. Once you’ve tasted it, it’s hard to stop. »

If this sport is not yet widespread on our territory, that does not mean that it has not developed there! Last year, a Belgian team won the World Cup clubs in the Czech Republic. Will it be the same at the next World Cup, in 2024?
