Dirk Nowitzki Becomes First German to be Inducted into NBA Hall of Fame

He did it! Dirk Nowitzki (45) has remained loyal to his club, the Dallas Mavericks, since moving to the USA. In 2019, after 21 seasons in the North American professional league, the basketball icon ended her active career. Because of his outstanding performance, there has long been talk of induction into the NBA Hall of Fame. Now he’s finally done it: Dirk was the first German to be admitted and reacts very emotionally.

“Two words have been going through my head for months: Thank you very much. That means everything to me,” he said in his almost 15-minute speech, as Der Spiegel reports. Among other things, he thanks his ex-coach Don Nelson, former teammates Steve Nash and Jason Kidd (50) and Marc Cuban, the owner of his long-standing club. Special thanks also go to his parents: “You sacrificed so much. What you did for me I will never forget for the rest of my life. If I’m only half as good a father as you parents were for me, then I’m happy. Thank you.”

Last year it became clear how grateful his former club is to the native of Würzburg. Dirk got his own statue in front of the gym where the Dallas Mavericks play their home games. “She looks incredible. […] The thing will be here long after we’re gone, and other generations can come here and be proud,” he said at the time.
